Worked example

A 2.8 m rise with 18 cm risers = 16 steps. With 28 cm treads, the stringer ≈ 5.4 m.

Recommendations

  • Keep risers 17–18 cm and treads 26–30 cm
  • Maintain a constant riser height across the flight
  • Leave at least 2 m of headroom above each step

Tips & advice

  • Riser + tread should total about 45 cm (comfort rule)
  • Landings every 12–15 steps reduce fatigue
  • Add a handrail at 90–100 cm height
