How it works

Volume = length × width × height. It is used to size air conditioners (BTU), ventilation rates and heating power.

Worked example

A 5 m × 4 m room with 2.5 m ceilings has a volume of 50 m³.

Recommendations

  • Use volume, not area, when sizing an air conditioner
  • For HVAC, allow ~30–40 W per m³
  • Include the exact ceiling height, often 2.5–2.7 m

Tips & advice

  • Measure height at several points, floors can be uneven
  • For lofts, use the average usable height
  • Volume matters for CO₂ / ventilation calculations too
